What the public thinks of Franklin Boulevard today
BEST asked: How safe, practical, and attractive is Franklin Boulevard adjacent to the University of Oregon for everyone today?
Here is what they wrote. The comments have been categorized by some topics that were frequently raised.
the crosswalk light going to 515 apartment building is broken which is super unsafe & is endangering students every day
Potholes are terrible
My main issue with Franklin boulevard is that it is incredibly car oriented. I understand why but I think it’s time that the city start to prioritize bikes and peds on that street. Especially with all of the new apartments that are going up in the area.
I ask that you prioritize pedestrian and bike safety.
It’s not attractive, especially walking. The sidewalks aren’t bad but even if it’s a short distance I prefer the bus.
Worst street in Eugene by far. I wish I could bike on it, and I wish that the EmX was less bumpy/unpleasant. Needs more trees, slower cars, bike lanes, better bus lanes. If there are roundabouts, they should have a cutout for EmX to go straight through. If the bus had to go around a big roundabout with a constant sharp turn, I would never ride it again.
i think signage could be a bit better as well as issues with the busses
Not really the pavement could be better but there are rarely crashes or accidents on franklin i drive through there to get to uo almost every day
Franklin Blvd is very much an eye sore. A lot of the pavement is uneven and is not the safest for bike or skateboarding. I’ve seen people run into each other because there is not enough room to skate on the sidewalk.
I think there are so many people near Franklin who walk that if that areas was to become more walkable, it would see so much more foot traffic almost instantly.
Its in a area that i often treverse on foot or skateboard its not ideal for this at the moment
If it came to a vote, I would blow up franklin in some spectacular fashion. However, updating it to be a multi-modal urban street sounds like a great alternative.
Pavement quality leading into Eugene from Glenwood is often poor. Not having an option to turn left on some streets when coming from Glenwood are difficult (ex. Walnut and Agate) and often lead visitors to missing turns for UO, leading to more traffic and increased u-turns.
Speed limit too high/not enforced
Not safe for biking or skating at all
High urban heat centered around the eastern portion of Franklin, near the hotels and businesses (little to no trees)
Biking and walking is extremely inconvenient in this area and it is loud and super ugly with unsafe high speeds and very large intersections and ped crossings
Franklin Blvd has very little car traffic 90% of the time, and it caters to the worst car congestion scenarios. I find myself waiting for a walk sign with no cars in the way. The bus route is nice and flows easily, but i wish it came more often.
Bike lanes MUST be protected (and hopefully, two way) in order to encourage students to bike and discourage car use. The traffic noise also interrupts the daily life of students.
I live in the Laurel Hill neighborhood so my daily commute is along Franklin Blvd. I never feel safe skating, biking, or walking on the sidewalk between the I-5 entrance and Walnut. There is no separation between the high speed road the pedestrians. It is also extremely dirty and uncared for. The rest of Franklin is also inconvenient and in poor condition for anything that isn’t a car.
I feel as if there is not a lot of light to see pedestrians on bikes, scooters, or walking. More light could reduce the amount of people who get his corrsing the street.
