How safe, practical, and attractive is Franklin Boulevard adjacent to the University of Oregon for everyone today?

In 2023, we fielded an online survey (now closed) to learn what people and businesses think.

Overall

Over three-quarters of respondents (634) rated Franklin Boulevard today overall as “fair” (253), “poor” (203), or “worst” (39); less than a quarter rated it as “best” (11) or “good” (128):

Themes

Looking at more detailed survey responses, several themes emerged:

  • Safety: At least half of survey respondents indicated that Franklin’s current design is not safe for anyone: walkers, bikers, rollers, transit users, or drivers.
  • Motor vehicles: Although some respondents wanted Franklin to continue prioritizing car throughput, the overwhelming majority of respondents indicated that they were in favor of making the street more multimodal.
  • Place: Another common sentiment was the desire to make Franklin Boulevard a “place”: an aesthetically pleasing and pleasant destination for people using all modes of transportation and a welcoming gateway to Eugene.
  • Roundabouts: Most respondents indicated that they are concerned about including roundabouts in the future design, while others supported the idea.
  • Businesses and neighbors: Some respondents shared their fears that the redesign project would harm businesses along and neighborhoods near the corridor.
